[utah recap]

This is probably my favorite photo I’ve taken in recent years (which I’ve now included for sale as a print!) , not just because it is a celebration of nature, seasons, and National Parks, but because to me, it encapsulates the the exuberance and awe of speeding through this landscape, while periodically being forced to stop and absorb the unreal-ness of it all. Zion in the autumn is a sight to behold, and I hope this gives you a piece of that peace.

Utah has been on my bucket list for years and years now—there were many failed spring break trip attempts, but in retrospect, I’m glad other trips never worked out. Being able to visit in late fall enabled us to visit some super touristy sites while avoiding the majority of crowds. Angel’s Landing was pure pain and adrenaline. The Narrows was a wet and slippery hike and I probably rolled my ankle three times, but still unlike anything I’ve ever done before.

We alternated between work days and hike days, which turned out to be a great idea for muscle soreness and mental health from election week.

Top highlights include:

  • Renting e-bikes to bike through the park to the starting point for the Narrows rather than taking the shuttle. They were a bit pricey, but provided a way better experience for taking in the landscape than the shuttle.

  • The view from the top of Angel’s Landing (below)

  • Watching Brittany Runs a Marathon and eating homemade noodles

  • Not having cell phone data to constantly check insane election updates

  • Taking off the drysuit after getting back to our bikes from The Narrows

  • The weather—it was around 70 the whole week and started snowing the day we headed back

  • Bryce Canyon geography talks

  • Having the opportunity to take landscape photos for basically the first time this year

  • Forgetting half of our belongings outside of an Airbnb for a whole day until arriving at the next Airbnb, realizing we had basically nothing we needed, and having to drive another hour and a half to get our stuff back

  • Local pizza joints that have vegan pizza
